Several Updates from the President

Strategic Plan: After a robust discussion at recent meetings, the FPU Board of Trustees approved the strategic plan, subject to taking into account a few comments and recommendations. In addition, the board greatly appreciated the level of engagement involving the whole community in these sessions, and commended the committee on their efforts. I would like to add my appreciation to all who participated in the process, and a special thanks to the strategic planning committee who spent so much time and effort on this project! Our next-steps include setting goals for enrollment, academic programs, etc. followed by the development of tactics and timeframes at the department level.

Sunbird Softball: For those of you who haven’t seen the local news coverage or checked out our athletics site, I’m extremely pleased to announce women's softball as FPU’s 17th sport! Women’s softball has been under discussion for many years, first reviewed by Faculty Senate in 2010. Recently it has become a higher priority as a recommendation to meet Title IX standards on gender equity as part of our NCAA process. The budget that was approved for the coming year includes modest start-up costs to get a club team going in the 2013-14 year. As we move forward with our campus master plan over the next several months, one of the issues that will be considered is the feasibility of developing a softball field on campus in the future.

Approved Budget: We did achieve a balanced budget for fiscal year 2013-14 that received board approval, thanks to all the difficult work done by administration and budget managers prior to the board meeting. Every budget manager was asked to scrutinize his/her budget with the idea of saving dollars without sacrificing quality of service. Thank you! We succeeded in meeting the board’s request to balance the year’s budget while providing the faculty step raise, as well as an increase for staff. You will be hearing more about a different budgeting process moving forward, that will result in a rolling five-year budget plan. Budgets are now on their way to individual budget managers.

Dean/VP of the Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary: Recently we made a campus-wide announcement that Terry Brensinger, Ph.D., has been advanced as the finalist for the position of dean/vice president of the Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary.
For the past several months the search committee—co-chaired by Tim Geddert, Ph.D., and composed of faculty, staff, alumni, student leadership, administration and pastors—has met and processed numerous applications of highly qualified candidates as a result of a national search. The process to identify the next leader of our growing seminary has been prayerful and thorough. As a result, it speaks to the quality of Terry and his academic preparation, experience, scholarship, leadership and reputation to emerge as the top candidate.
Terry currently serves as professor of pastoral ministry. Before coming to the biblical seminary two years ago, he was a faculty member at Messiah College, pastored churches and taught overseas. The schedule to present Terry to the university and local church community is being finalized, pending his travel and speaking requirements, but is tentatively set for the week of June 24. Only one candidate will be introduced to the campus for this post, which is a presidential appointment. This is due to the uniqueness of the seminary leadership position, which is both an academic dean and a vice president since the seminary is both a school within the university and the national seminary for the USMB Conference.
