PART 2:

Emotions, Virtues, and Ethics, our 2015 FPU Philosophy Lecture Series, is hosted by the FPU Philosophy Department. This year’s lectures will feature eminent virtue ethicist and emotion theorist Robert C. Roberts from Baylor University.
Wednesday, April 8th, 6-8pm (BC Lounge). LECTURE: “EMOTIONS AND VIRTUES IN THE MORAL LIFE,” by Robert C. Roberts (Distinguished Professor of Ethics, Baylor University). In his keynote public lecture in philosophical moral psychology, Roberts will discuss his theory of emotions, and the critical roles that emotions play in virtues, moral judgments, and moral knowledge. The lecture is based on one of Roberts’s recent books, Emotions in the Moral Life (Cambridge University Press, 2013).
Thursday, April 9th, 6-8pm (BC Lounge). LECTURE: “CULTIVATING HUMILITY: THE CRITICAL INGREDIENTS,” by James Van Slyke (Assistant Professor of Psychology, FPU). After Van Slyke offers a close look at how it is that human beings can acquire and grow in humility, Robert C. Roberts will offer his own responsive account in “Learning Intellectual Humility,” followed by an integrative response from Scott Cleveland (Postdoctoral Fellow, Intellectual Humility Project, Saint Louis University). A closing panel Q&A discussion with all three speakers will focus on humility and its attendant emotions.
Friday, April 10th, 10am-Noon (BC Lounge): COURAGE, PRIDE, & HUMILITY. This more informal talk and discussion will feature a presentation by Scott Cleveland (Saint Louis University), entitled “Emotions of Moral and Intellectual Courage.” Robert C. Roberts will offer his own comments on “The Virtues of Pride and Humility,” and both speakers will lead attendees in a conversational discussion of these character qualities, and their contributions to emotional, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of our lives.
