FPU advances to final year of NCAA transition

Fresno Pacific University received notification from the NCAA on Friday that it has successfully completed the second year of candidacy in the association's Division II membership process and has been granted provisional membership as it advances to year three of the three-year process.
"I am pleased that the NCAA has moved us into the provisional year," said senior associate athletic director Leslie Schuemann. "Our administration and coaching staff have worked hard to meet all of the requirements to keep us moving successfully through this process.  We appreciate our partners across campus who have committed to this process including financial aid, the registrar's office, admissions our faculty athletics representative  Don Diboll and our president Dr. Pete Menjares.  This is truly a team effort."
The Sunbirds competed in their first full season of NCAA Division II and Pacific West Conference competition this past season. FPU's teams were immediately eligible for conference championships and awards, but are ineligible for national NCAA postseason until the university receives full membership. FPU will retain membership in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) for the upcoming season to give teams a postseason destination.
As a provisional member, FPU will continue to operate as an NCAA Division II institution in every way. The Sunbirds will now have the added benefit of being able to use the NCAA logo for the first time.
FPU began the transition to NCAA Division II membership in 2011 and hopes to have achieved full active membership status by next summer.
