Senior Professionals Announcement 1/15

The Senior Professionals seminar for next week Tuesday, January 15 (2-4 p.m. in SCC 103), features Alan Peters on “What is DNA, and Why is it Important (…even to Mennonites)?”

Everybody seems to be talking about DNA, but few people have really looked at the basic nature of this new phenomenon and wondered about its impact upon each of us. Very few, in fact, have reflected upon the “small print” – the historical, genealogical, and ethical issues that this new and novel discovery has brought to our attention.  Faculty, administration and staff are invited to attend as guests of the Council.

Alan Peters, has long been a student of genealogy, and has been associated with the GRANDMA Project since its founding. He will lead us through a basic introduction to its newest tool—"Genetic Genealogy”—and describe the impact which DNA research has uncovered not only affecting the field of genealogy, but to a host of other disciplines: health, law, criminal justice, adoption and ethics. He will use Mennonite genealogy, even his own personal DNA results, as examples of how genetic research can bring new insights and benefits to each one of us!
