FPU Protocols for Concerning Student Behavior/Conduct

In the event that you come across a difficult or disturbing situation with a student and you need immediate or ongoing assistance, please contact Campus Safety and/or Student Life offices.

  1. Student Development (formerly Student Life) is responsible for maintaining and managing student issues related to behavior and conduct (except those related to academic integrity).
  2. Campus Safety Office is responsible for emergency responses and for addressing issues related to the behavior of non-students.

It is our goal to handle situations at the lowest level possible, provide safety for the FPU community, and utilize the appropriate resources to accomplish the best possible outcome.  Below are some guidelines to help you determine when to get someone else involved and who to get involved.

Please note, it is understandable that not everyone’s threshold, comfort level, or situational awareness is the same.  When making your decision, it is perfectly acceptable to err on the side of caution.  Please allow those of us who deal with these situations with greater frequency to help you.  We believe that a collaborative approach is most likely to bring about the types of favorable results we all desire.

1. IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION NECESSARY:  Student behavior in a classroom, office, or elsewhere on campus so severe that in your judgment life, health, or property could be at immediate risk and an immediate intervention is necessary.

CALL CAMPUS SAFETY AT 453-2298, OR PUSH AN EMERGENCY CALL BOX BUTTON, OR IN THE MOST EXTREME OF CIRCUMSTANCES, CALL FRESNO POLICE AT 911

2.  NO IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION NECESSARY:  Student behavior in a classroom, office or elsewhere on campus that is uncomfortable, is disadvantaging someone, could be interrupting the educational process, could possibly escalate, could possibly become more dangerous, and/or would ultimately benefit from a behavioral intervention.

CONTACT MANDIE WALL* (DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE LIFE) IN STUDENT DEVELOPMENT VIA HER EXTENSION (453-5696) OR VIA EMAIL (amanda.wall@fresno.edu).  PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PROVIDE SOME LEVEL OF DETAIL IN REGARDS TO TIMES, DATES, AND THE BEHAVIORS THAT WERE PRESENT.
