What is the Center for Peacemaking Basic Institute?

The Basic Institute focuses on the fundamentals of peacemaking in the pursuit of "shalom". Shalom is a Hebrew word meaning wholeness, completeness, harmony, prosperity, welfare, tranquility and peace. This workshop teaches effective approaches to conflict resolution and mediation and addresses issues of conflict styles (among other things) in the larger framework of peacemaking.

Participants in the Basic Institute will be exploring models for analyzing, responding to, and transforming conflict through personal and community case studies. The course will reference The Big Book of Restorative Justice (2015) by Howard Zehr, Allan MacRae, Kay Pranis and Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz.

What is COSA?

A reentering adult committed to making things as right as possible in every area of their life is surrounded by an inner circle of trained community volunteers, who meet weekly through the first year of the individuals release from incarceration. The inner circle exists inside an outer circle of professionals that include supervision agents, psychologists, law enforcement officers, social service workers, etc.

COSA begins working with individuals six months prerelease in partnerships with invested agencies and organizations. These circles are a proven restorative response used around the world and across cultures with healing and restorative outcomes.
