Should I use Zoom or Skype for Business?

With the university ramping up resources for teaching all of our classes online, there has also been a ramp-up of those folks asking for Zoom accounts. The university has purchased additional Zoom licenses to accommodate faculty need for this online teaching tool. In order to help manage the number of licenses the university has purchased for Zoom we would ask that you only request a license if one is needed for academic purposes. Both Zoom and Skype for Business can facilitate online meetings and can be used by those with FPU accounts and those without as long as they have the meeting link. Skype for Business is heavily integrated into Microsoft Outlook so you can schedule a meeting, invite who you would like to attend, and with one click, make it a Skype for Business meeting. Zoom has additional functionality that lends itself for teaching synchronous online classes. Let’s be good stewards of the resources provided and use Skype for Business to facilitate online meetings and save Zoom licenses for those who need the additional functionality. If you’d like additional assistance with setting up a Skype for Business meeting, please contact the helpdesk at, for Zoom assistance, contact the Center for Online Learning at
