Free Books for Department Reading Group Conversations about Race

Are you concerned about racism, but don’t always know how to talk about it? We want to help! In an effort to celebrate Fresno Pacific’s diversity while providing a resource for building cultural competency, we would like to provide departments with an opportunity to start a reading group designed to bring together people from your department, expand awareness and appreciation of diversity issues, promote open and extended discussion of diversity issues and enhance a healthy community at Fresno Pacific.

For this coming Fall 2020 semester, the free book will be, “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo. Here are excerpts from Amazon’s summary: “In this New York Times bestseller, Ijeoma Oluo offers a hard-hitting but user-friendly examination of race in America. Widespread reporting on aspects of white supremacy--from police brutality to the mass incarceration of Black Americans--has put a media spotlight on racism in our society. Still, it is a difficult subject to talk about…. In So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo guides readers of all races through subjects ranging from intersectionality and affirmative action to ‘model minorities’ in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life.”

How to form a Department Reading Group?

Connect with people in your department and decide the specifics of your reading group (who is a part of the group, when will you meet, how fast will you get through the book). Feel free to create your own discussion questions/topics or contact us for resources.

Why form a Department Reading Group?

Processing big questions with a reading group can be helpful to understand the content and its current implications more fully. As the “Community of Learners” that The FPU Idea says we are, we have much to learn from one another!
